Kaffe Magnum Opus really started as an aroma in 1955 or so, in an A and P store in East Rockaway, Long Island. Bob Johnson, the person who started KMO was then only 10 but had the enviable task of grinding the coffee for his parents home use. "I always remember the aroma", says Bob. "That aroma hit me again in the Galleria Mall in Philadelphia in 1989 and I decided there and then to change my life completely."
After 23 years in finance, Bob followed the aroma into the coffee business and started KMO in 1990. The jumping off point was the Specialty Coffee Association's Annual Seminar held in Seattle in 1990. Top
KMO now only roasts for the Specialty Coffee trade. The start however was am in line store in the Cumberland Mall, Vineland, New Jersey. Southern New Jersey is frequently talked about as the 52nd state of Union. It is flat, lightly populated and dominated by the Pinelands or Pine Barrens.
The Pine Barrens are a 1,000,000 acre forest, crisscrossed by the original dirt roads from the 1700's. See www.forgottentowns.com for more information. The site is maintained by Bob as a hobby. Top
The Mall store was a combination drink bar, bean store and gift source. It was very successful and led to the opening of a Cafe in downtown Vineland, where Coffee Time (KMO) led an effort to revive the downtown. It was a full fledged cafe with entertainment. Top
The cafe building became the Headquarters and roasting plant for KMO in 1996 when KMO emerged. This past year the roasting plant was moved to Millville, New Jersey into larger more appropriate quarters. Top
KMO has been growing rapidly and plans to continue to grow rapidly by becoming the Roaster of Choice for the Specialty Coffee Trade. The company focuses on independent stores and multi store operations. Top
Freshness is king in the coffee business and KMO only roasts to order. Even in it new facility with larger roasting equipment the focus is on roasting batches. This insures freshness. Top
The Web will soon be a close ally for KMO customers. New sites like this one will focus on great coffees. Customers will be empowered to order directly into the companies order entry system soon. Top
KMO lives what it says. It is flexible and has changed
many times to fit customer needs. It now has well over 200 flavors, 100
origins and blends and is now intensifying efforts to market organic and fair
trade coffee. Top
KMO markets OCIA certified organics and is a Fair Trade Certified Coffee roaster. Top
Tour our plant and observe the typical day. Starts slow, builds to a crescendo at 5 PM when UPS arrives to pick up the outbound, freshly roasted coffee. Virtually all of our coffee is roasted to order. The exception proves the rule. For example, if it is Monday and we have no French Roast, we will do a large batch because we can predict that the batch will go today. Top
Answer the telephones. Our sales professionals all work from their homes. They are professionals with children or simply the need to work from home. Even for them, if they are busy on the telephone, the calls bounce to our roasting facility and are answered by a person. Top
Until we drop. On the religious holiday, Good Friday, our new customer, Central Craze had moved. The shipment was headed to the old address and we got the call from a Mr. Siracusa around 4 PM. Central Craze was opening for Easter in Ocean City. This is a big day for Ocean City and Central Craze.
The call came to our plant from the salesperson. Notice that they were all working at 4 PM on Good Friday.
Lisa volunteered to take her family for an impromptu dinner in Ocean City. She was prepared to redo the order and drive it to the store. Fortunately, UPS was also working and we were able to redirect the coffee to the new address. It was delivered around 5 PM and we all went home to our families.
Although it would have been tough to drive to California, the same service will be given to you, no matter where you are located. Top
